SHNSS Intern Program -- Explanations, Expectations and Limitations

The Intern Program at SHNSS offers college graduates an opportunity to teach full-time at SHNS and OLGNS while pursuing credential coursework at Santa Clara University. The purpose of the program is to attract quality individuals for our Nativity students and to assist young graduates in the pursuit of their teaching career. The Intern Program may be a one, two, or three year commitment.

The contract stipulates:

(Demanding) The mission of the Nativity Schools of San José “demands that the staff and faculty maintain a constant commitment to hard work, moral integrity, spiritual values, and the highest professional standards. Its mission also requires that staff and faculty willingly make real personal sacrifices in the areas of salary, time, and commitment to social justice and the education of youth.” (Mission Statement)

(Compensation) The “TEACHER will receive compensation package for the period of his/her contract. This includes housing, food stipend, transportation, medical insurance, $300 (first year) - $400 (second year) - $500 (second year plus JVC year) monthly stipend, and five (5) quarter classes at Santa Clara University.” A third year at the Teacher Intern position may be offered – at the discretion of the President and Principal.

Explanations – Expectations – and Limitations:

  1. Housing – share an apartment or house with another intern Housing and utilities– are provided from the contract’s inception through the summer months - if the intern is returning the following year and attending summer school or working @ SHNSS’s summer camps. Otherwise, housing is not provided during July and early August.
  2.  Food Stipend -- breakfast and lunch are provided at SHNSS, and a supplemental $100 monthly stipend is given.
  3. Transportation – if transportation is needed, interns are expected to share a school vehicle. Gas is provided to-and-from school and other school-related trips.
  4. Medical Insurance – medical, dental and vision care is offered to Interns through Kaiser Health Insurance
  5. Teaching Commitment to SHNS must come first and foremost. Each intern will be assigned a full-time teaching load at SHNSS.
  6. Credential Course Load -- Interns are expected to register for one (1) credential class per quarter at SCU. Exception – students may take two courses during the summer quarter.

    Limitations:
First year students at SCU may take only one SCU course per quarter.

Second year students at SCU may take two courses in two of the three quarters – if they petition and receive approval from the school principal. Additionally, to guarantee afternoon activity period and Homework Club coverage, the interns must coordinate their course selections so that no more than two (2) interns are scheduled for a class on any one evening, Monday through Thursday.

Note: These limitations may have been modified for Interns during the 2006-07 year, but a comprehensive plan has yet to be worked out.

  7. SCU Credential Program – If the program requires that two courses are taken simultaneously, SHNSS will make every effort to work with the intern to allow a two-course quarter.
  8. The Intern Program at SHNSS doesnot guarantee a credential at the conclusion of the contract. A student in the Intern Program for three years is eligible for enough SCU classes to complete the course requirements. HOWEVER, SHNS makes no promises of a completed credential program. The credential requirements (both state student-teaching provisions and SCU course programs) may change over the term of the intern contract.
